I don’t make a very good sick person. Not at all!!! I get very grumpy when I have to stay in bed, but it forces me to stop and look and things that I ordinarily wouldn’t have time to do. Maybe it’s all been for a reason that I have gotten such a bad case of the flu. I know one thing for sure, it’s opened my eyes to so many things around me and most importantly what really matter most in the world. Last night I was so sick, then my daughter poked her head to see if I was ok in the room and it was as if I had never seen anything so beautiful in my whole life. She was breathtaking!!! She’s going to not like that I wrote that, but I have to speak the truth. I found this photo of her from three years ago and I wanted to share it in this post. There has never been a time in her life that she wasn’t beautiful and she just lights up the entire room when she walks through it!!! When you stop long enough to really look at your life, you realize that all that truly matters are the people in your life who you love and who love you.

I spent most of 2010 questioning whether or not I truly wanted to be in business as a photographer. That may surprise the few of you that will actually read this. The reason I feel that way is that the business of photography changed and it changed quite rapidly after I decided to take my life long passion and turn it into something more. Those who tell you to understand business and write a successful business plan BEFORE you get into business are 100% correct. Those who I have seen become very successful and very fast are not only good in business, they are masters at it. I applaud them for what they have achieved. They have marketed themselves into the top 5% of the industry, whether or not they are the best. Honestly, this exists in all professions but I have seen it first hand in mine. This qualifies as all three: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly – depending on the perspective you are coming from!

I learned many things about myself and made many mistakes this past year. My generosity is both my best asset and my worst at the same time. I gave of myself to the point where I “gave it away.” Never, I repeat never, under charge a client because of what someone else charges or because you don’t have the nerve to charge what you know the product is worth. What’s the worst that can happen if you tell a client that something is going to cost double what they are willing to pay? They simply say “no” and you remain true to yourself. I realized this past year, and this is really a tough one for me to say, but I finally have accepted that I have talent. There, I said it…….and yes, I truly didn’t believe it for the longest time. The longer I look at other people’s work, the more I realize that my hard work has paid off. It’s hard to be good in photography. You can’t fake it. You can’t Photoshop your way out of it. I allowed myself to get discouraged at the small-minded mentality I saw in many potential clients I came across. I hear from so many photographers that things are the way they are so you must find a way to incorporate it into your business. Handing over a cd of your images to a client just goes against all my beliefs. This issue has been discussed SO much, but it’s just crazy that this is where things are at. I have spent years, many years, perfecting what I do. Purchasing the best camera equipment, computers, the latest and greatest software, software training, seminars, workshops……..on and on and on. When a client asks you to hand over your images for free what they are really saying is that they don’t put a value on what you do, what you have spent in both time and money or respect your artistic ability.  It costs money to be in business, if you can’t make a profit then you don’t do it!

Some great and wonderful things happened in 2010, without a doubt. I photographed many events for the wonderful Huntington Beach Academy for the Performing Arts, the program both of my children are a part of at Huntington Beach High School. I have come to love those kids in APA so very much and they have been so wonderful to me and have shown so much appreciation for the work I have done. That has seriously warmed my heart in ways I can’t express. Did I happen to mention that HBHS beat all the other schools in Huntington Beach on their API scores this past year??!! Yeah, pretty awesome!!! I have been hearing for a decade how if you live in Huntington Beach you must send your kids to one particular school because it’s known as the “academic giant” in Huntington Beach. Guess what………IT’S NOT TRUE!!!! I have never been more impressed with a school, its administration or more in love with a campus. Have you seen the campus at Huntington High School??? It’s stunning!!! Thank you for giving my kids such a wonderful environment to live out their high school years!!!

One of my photography idols, Debra Rothenberg, gave me one of the greatest moments of my career this past year. Debra L. Rothenberg is an award winning photographer who lives in New York City.  Her work has been seen around the world and her extensive clientele includes ABC-TV, People, Rolling Stone Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Columbia/CBS Records and many others. Debra has taken all my favorite photographs of my favorite artist, Bruce Springsteen. Through one of my dearest friends Debra became aware of me and my work and gave me some very lovely compliments. It’s was one of the defining moments for me as a photographer, to be acknowledged by someone whose work I have respected for so many years. Thanks, Deb………I will never forget it!!!

A young lady, Cassidy Love, who is a sister of one of students in APA won her first beauty pageant and some cash prizes with photos I took of her. I was very proud of that and that I could help her achieve some of her dreams. Congrats to you, Cassidy!  I also had the honor of photographing the gorgeous Swing Kittens, what a great shoot that was!!!  Thank you to all the brides and grooms, actors who needed head shots, family portraits, lifestyle photography clients and those of you who called me based on a referral and used my services.  I thank you all and value each and every one of you!!!

I am tough, I am a fighter and I will continue to fight the good fight as long as I have breath in my body.    I won’t be defeated by this economy or by those who claim this is a young person’s industry.  I say “baloney” to that!!   Every time I hit that shutter I am putting every moment of my life,  every tear I have shed and have watched others shed, every high and every low, everything that has ever touched me and every darn bit of wisdom I have accumulated in my life goes into that image.  So you know what, I have twice as much of all that great stuff that someone half my age has and that is what distinguishes me from the young guns.  You can’t package or market wisdom or get it at a seminar, now can you??!!!

To all of my supporters:  I love you “with all the madness in my soul!!!!”

Love,

Cindy

Fourteen years ago an absolutely incredible and life-changing thing happened to me, I gave birth to my second child. This time God gave me a beautiful baby girl. Not just any girl, mind you. She is beautiful, talented, funny and just a joy to be around.  She can sing, composes beautiful music, plays piano and is starting to play guitar.  She loves her family, her friends and she especially loves Taylor Lautner!!  I took her and some of her closest friends to Fashion Island in Newport Beach for the second year in a row to hang out, shop, eat and have fun. Of course, no shopping trip is complete without a visit by two Star Wars troupers, who just happened to walk by in full costume. Why, of course!!! It’s the OC, anything can happen there, right?! I have learned so many things through my daughter and her friends that I had almost forgotten from my youth, it’s so wonderful to be able to feel like that again once in a while.

The last photo was taken exactly nine years ago at Fashion Island (yeah, we love that place!!!) on your birthday.  We had gone there with our dear friend, Dan and Joyce and went to the same restaurant we went to on Monday – The Cheesecake Factory.  You got a beautiful new bear at Build-A-Bear, which you named Patti (after Patti Scialfa).  Yes, I have trained my kids right that they must all things that have to do with Bruce Springsteen!

My darling, I love you so much and I know the best years of your life are still to come. Up next: High School and the Huntington Beach Academy for the Performing Arts!!!!

I love you a million Swedish Fish!!

It used to be that all you had to do was blog and the world around you was good. Now, it’s bloggin’, tweating, Facebooking and whatever seems to be the social medium of the day. Yeah, it’s hard to keep up and I am guilty of focusing so much of my attention on Facebook that my blog has been horribly ignored. So, to make up to my blog, I gave it a facelift and I did it myself (thank you, very much!!!) Yes, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!!!!! I decided I was going to tackle CSS and wordpress code and do it myself and you know what, it’s been kind of fun. Time consuming, yes, but fun!

Over the next couple of months I am planning on designing a brand new blog that I created from scratch, but in the meantime this is what I’ve got. I wanted to wish you all a very happy, safe and fun 4th of July!!!

By best to you!!!

Cindy

(it’s Buddy’s first 4th of July with our family, I hope he doesn’t get too frightened from all the noise!!!)

This has been one fantastic week! What started last Sunday with an out-of-this-world concert by David Cook @ The Taste of Newport in Newport Beach, CA has ended a week filled with new friends from all walks of life. All who share a common love and respect for a 26-year old man from Missouri who can sing like nobody’s business! Interestingly enough, the people I have been have come in contact this week are so completely different from each other. A young woman from Iowa, a CEO from Newport Beach, a life coach from Beverly Hills, an elderly couple from South County – this man’s fan base is unquestionably diverse and far reaching. I have so enjoyed meeting and talking to so many this week, but just when I thought it was coming to end I got a delightful email from a fellow photographer. It was so sweet, that I have decided to share it with you. Mostly so I can acknowledge fellow photographer’s who went out of their way to say “thank you” to me. Now it’s my turn to thank them. Here’s an excerpt from their email:

Hi Cindy,

My husband and I are photographers in Louisville, KY and I just found your David Cook photos on Facebook & Smugmug—LOVE them!

We attended his concert in May in Louisville, but weren’t allowed to take “pro” cameras into the venue. I was completely bummed.

Anyway, just wanted to shout out to a fellow photographer/Cook fan! There are so many bad, blurry photos of David online, that it was nice to see some great shots of him for once. Thanks for the eye candy!

Warmly,
Denise Nichols

These lovely photographer’s are a husband/wife team from Kentucky. They are International Award Winning Todd and Denise Nichols from their website ToddNichols.com and their wonderful blog. Of course I’m thrilled when a client loves my work but when one of my peers takes time out of their busy lives to acknowledge my work it makes me giddy with excitement. So to Todd and Denise – THANK YOU!!!!!

ENJOY THE REST OF THIS BEAUTIFUL WEEKEND!

Taste of Newport, Newport Beach, California

I have had the pleasure of seeing this incredible man live now twice in the past few weeks and I simply can’t get enough of him. Earlier this month I saw him at the Music Box in Hollywood and he was phenomenal. He rocks my world! David Cook, American Idol winner season 7, is truly a star in every sense of the word. His rock and roll shows leave you breathless and wanting more. Being a photographer I usually shoot for everyone else, but tonight it was all for me and it was so fun! I wish I could see one of David’s shows every week, that would be my definition of a perfect week. The cougars were out in force tonight to see our beloved “Cookie” and he was on it! My dream job would be to photograph his shows all the time, but then would I really be able to call it work? Doubt it!
@thedavidcook – you are the greatest!!!!

BTW, I’d say the ten thousand times I voted for you after the finale was worth it……..most definitely worth it :)

Is it possible that my baby is 13 years old!!!!! C-R-A-Z-Y, isn’t it??!! So I took my daughter and 6 of her friends on a scavenger hunt at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. They had such a great time, it was an incredibly beautiful day and I had so much fine pretending I was 13 again. Seriously, it doesn’t feel as if it was that long ago that I was – scary! So here’s the funny part of how the day went. I spend hours writing out this perfectly-planned scavenger hunt so the girls will have about two hours of adventure. I hand out the instructions when we get there, they break into two groups and take off like mad cattle! I’m thinking, “Cool, I have a few hours to shop and catch my breath!” So, I wander into (what else?) a camera store, literally talk to a man there for 10 minutes when my cell phone rings. It’s the first group AND THEY’RE DONE!!!! DONE???!!! No, not possible! They ran like the wind, assuredly ignoring my directions, and finished in record time. I’m still in the camera store when they run in, dripping with sweat, red-faced and out of breath. Holy Cow!!!!! Did they ever get it wrong, they thought it was a race!!!! Even worse, they thought there was a prize for the team who finished in record time. Ok people, if you are planning on throwing something like this, please make sure you tell them to SLOW down and have fun!

Here they are and may I say that all these young women are lovely!

The entire group of girls – aren’t they just FAB!!!
